DBT

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

At its core, DBT combines the principles of behavioral science, mindfulness, and acceptance strategies

to help individuals manage intense emotional experiences and reduce problematic behaviors.

The word "dialectical" refers to the integration of two opposing concepts: acceptance and change.

This balance encourages individuals to accept themselves as they are

while also striving for improvement in their behaviors and coping strategies.

DBT is typically structured in four key modules:

mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Mindfulness

Teaches individuals to stay present in the moment, increasing self-awareness and acceptance.

Distress tolerance

Focuses on managing crises without resorting to harmful behaviors like self-harm or substance abuse.

Emotional regulation

Helps individuals understand and control their emotional responses

Interpersonal Effectiveness

Teaches skills for healthier, more assertive relationships.

By teaching both acceptance and change, DBT helps individuals build a more balanced and stable life.
